Heyward Point: A Legacy-Inspired Lowcountry Community with a Vision for the Future

Honoring the Land: A New Chapter at Heyward Point

At the edge of the Lowcountry where the Colleton and Okatie Rivers meet, you’ll find a place of quiet beauty, layered history, and lasting potential. More than just a gated community, Heyward Point is built on land with deep South Carolina roots, once used by the Heyward family, including Thomas Heyward Jr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

As we begin a new chapter on this remarkable land, we do so with respect for its natural setting, for its architectural heritage, and for its history.

📜 A Legacy Both Historic and Complex

Thomas Heyward Jr. played a role in shaping America’s founding, representing South Carolina in the Continental Congress. A prominent figure in the Revolutionary era, his name carries weight in the region, and the land now known as Heyward Point was once part of his family’s private retreat.

But that legacy is not without complication. Like many of his time, Heyward was a wealthy plantation owner, and his success was built in part on the institution of slavery. The goal at Heyward Point is not to celebrate a version of the past that omits hard truths, but to honor the land by stewarding it thoughtfully.

🌿 A Vision Rooted in Place

Today, Heyward Point is being reimagined as a place for modern families to build legacies of their own. With spacious 1.2 to 4+ acre homesites, river views, and walking trails under live oaks, it’s a landscape designed to foster connection to nature, to neighbors, and to something bigger than ourselves.

Framed by ancient live oaks and winding riverfront, the entrance to Heyward Point offers a powerful sense of arrival that is quiet, natural, and distinctly Lowcountry. Rather than imposing something new, the vision for the community is shaped by the land itself.

In partnership with JParker Homes and KRA Architecture, the plan for Heyward Point is intentionally designed to enhance, not disrupt, the beauty that’s already here. This thoughtful vision includes:

  • A future boutique inn named after Thomas Heyward

  • Riverside pavilions for gatherings and community events

  • Recreational amenities like pickleball courts, walking trails, and fishing access

  • Design and build guidelines that preserve the land’s character and natural integrity
